Step into the world of Japanese horse racing with Derby Stallion 64, a detailed horse-racing simulation from ParityBit and MediaQuest.

Released in Japan in 2001, Derby Stallion 64 brings the long-running Derby Stallion series to Nintendo 64, giving players the chance to breed, train and race their own stable of thoroughbred horses.

Rather than being a straightforward arcade racing game, Derby Stallion 64 is built around the management and strategy of horse racing. Choose horses, manage their training and development, enter races and work towards building a successful stable.

The game draws heavily from Japan’s real-world horse-racing culture, with Japanese racing terminology, courses and competition structures forming a major part of the experience. Understanding Japanese will therefore be important if you want to get the most out of the game’s deeper management systems.

For collectors, Derby Stallion 64 is an interesting example of the specialised Japanese sports and simulation games that rarely made it outside the Japanese market. The Derby Stallion series has a long history in Japan, but this Nintendo 64 entry was never released internationally.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play. The game is entirely Japanese-language.

A wonderfully niche piece of Japanese Nintendo 64 history — particularly suited to collectors interested in horse racing, simulation games and Japan’s unique sports-game library.

Get the party started with Mario Party, the game that launched one of Nintendo’s most enduring multiplayer franchises.

Released in Japan in December 1998, Mario Party brings Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Wario and Donkey Kong together for a board-game adventure packed with competitive mini-games. Developed by Hudson Soft and published by Nintendo, it was the beginning of a series that would go on to become a staple of Nintendo multiplayer gaming.

Choose your character and compete across a series of colourful game boards, collecting coins and Stars as you race to become the ultimate Super Star. Between turns, you’ll be thrown into a huge selection of mini-games that test everything from timing and reflexes to button-mashing and pure luck.

With 1–4 player support, Mario Party is built around the classic Nintendo 64 multiplayer experience. Grab three friends, pick your characters and see who can survive the chaos — although perhaps don’t expect everyone to remain friends afterwards.

The original Mario Party is also notable for introducing many of the series’ familiar mechanics and characters, establishing the formula that would be expanded upon in Mario Party 2 and the games that followed.

The Japanese release launched on 18 December 1998, making it the original version of the game before its North American and PAL releases in 1999. The Japanese cartridge is titled simply Mario Party (マリオパーティ) and uses the product code NUS-CLBJ-JPN.

Interestingly, the Japanese version contains both English and Japanese language elements, so it is a little more accessible than some of the Japanese-exclusive titles in the SSG catalogue.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

The game also requires a Rumble Pak for some features.

A genuine Nintendo 64 multiplayer classic and an essential piece of the history of one of Nintendo’s biggest party-game franchises.

Take to the skies with Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team in Star Fox 64, Nintendo’s iconic Nintendo 64 space shooter.

Originally released in Japan in 1997, Star Fox 64 puts you in the cockpit of the Arwing as you defend the Lylat System from the forces of the evil Andross. Blast through enemy fighters, navigate asteroid fields and take on huge bosses as you fight your way towards Venom.

The game isn’t simply a straightforward run from beginning to end. Your performance during missions can open up different routes through the Lylat System, giving you multiple paths to explore and plenty of reason to replay the game. There are 15 missions across multiple branching routes, with different challenges and encounters depending on the choices you make.

You’ll spend most of your time behind the controls of Fox’s iconic Arwing, but the game also gives you the opportunity to pilot the Landmaster tank and explore underwater environments in the Blue Marine.

And then there’s the Rumble Pak.

Star Fox 64 was famously designed alongside Nintendo’s Rumble Pak and was the first Nintendo 64 game to support it. The Japanese release was even available as a bundle with the Rumble Pak, making it an important part of the accessory’s history.

When you’re finished saving the galaxy, challenge your friends to the game’s four-player multiplayer, with several different battle modes available.

The Japanese version is officially titled Star Fox 64 (スターフォックス64). Interestingly, Australian and European releases were renamed Lylat Wars because of trademark concerns surrounding the Star Fox name.

That makes the Japanese cartridge particularly appealing to collectors — you’re getting the original Star Fox 64 title, rather than the Lylat Wars name used on Australian N64 releases.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play. The game features Japanese text and menus.

A Nintendo 64 classic, an important part of the Rumble Pak’s history and one of the best-known games in the Japanese N64 library.

Step onto the court with Mario, Luigi, Peach and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom crew in Mario Tennis, Camelot’s classic Nintendo 64 tennis game.

Released in Japan in 2000, Mario Tennis brings the Mushroom Kingdom to the tennis court with a mix of accessible arcade-style gameplay and surprisingly deep mechanics. Choose from a colourful roster of Mario characters and compete across a range of singles and doubles matches.

The game is easy to pick up, but there’s plenty of room to develop your skills. Use different shot types, control your positioning and learn to anticipate your opponent as you work your way through increasingly challenging matches.

With up to four-player multiplayer, Mario Tennis is particularly well suited to the N64’s classic pick-up-and-play multiplayer experience. Grab a few friends, choose your characters and settle the score on the court.

It’s also an important game in Mario history. Mario Tennis marked the debut of Waluigi, who was introduced as Wario’s doubles partner, while also bringing Princess Daisy and Birdo back into the wider Mario sporting universe.

Developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo, the game was released in Japan on 21 July 2000, followed by North America and Europe later that year.

The Japanese version features Japanese text and menus and is a great way to experience this classic N64 sports title in its original Japanese release.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

A colourful, accessible and endlessly playable N64 classic — and an essential addition for any Mario or Nintendo 64 collection.

Take to the pitch with Jikkyō J.League Perfect Striker, Konami’s fast-paced Nintendo 64 football game featuring the teams and players of Japan’s J.League.

Released in Japan in 1998, Perfect Striker brings Konami’s acclaimed football gameplay to the Nintendo 64, combining responsive controls, arcade-style action and a full roster of Japanese professional teams.

Choose your J.League club and compete through a range of match and competition modes, with quick passing, dribbling, shooting and set pieces all forming part of the action. The game is designed to be easy to pick up while still offering plenty of room to develop your skills.

For football fans, the game’s biggest appeal is its connection to the 1998 J.League season, making it a fantastic time capsule of Japanese domestic football at the end of the 1990s.

It’s also an interesting piece of Konami history. The Perfect Striker series formed part of the lineage that would become better known internationally through International Superstar Soccer, one of Konami’s most successful football franchises.

The Japanese release is particularly interesting for collectors because the game was never localised under the Perfect Striker name for Western markets. It offers a glimpse at the Japanese origins of the series before its international evolution.

The game is presented in Japanese, so some knowledge of Japanese may be helpful when navigating menus and competition modes.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

A great piece of late-1990s Japanese football history and an interesting addition for fans of Konami’s classic football games.

Step into the world of Hyrule with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, one of the most influential games ever released for the Nintendo 64.

Released in Japan in 1998 as Zelda no Densetsu: Toki no Ocarina, Ocarina of Time takes Link on an unforgettable journey through Hyrule as he grows from a young Kokiri into the Hero of Time.

Explore forests, villages, deserts and mountains, solve intricate puzzles and take on some of the Nintendo 64’s most memorable dungeons. Along the way, you’ll collect weapons and items, learn powerful new abilities and face a huge range of enemies and bosses.

One of the game’s defining features is its ability to travel between childhood and adulthood, allowing Link to experience Hyrule at two different points in time. The Master Sword, the titular Ocarina of Time and a mysterious prophecy all play central roles in the adventure.

The game’s Z-targeting system was particularly revolutionary, giving players a new way to control a 3D character during combat. Its influence can still be seen throughout modern third-person action games.

The Japanese release is known as Zelda no Densetsu: Toki no Ocarina (ゼルダの伝説 時のオカリナ) and was released in Japan on 21 November 1998. This is the original Japanese release, rather than a Japanese-exclusive game, with Ocarina of Time subsequently released throughout North America, Europe and Australia.

Take to the pitch with Jikkyō J.League 1999: Perfect Striker 2, Konami’s fast-paced Nintendo 64 football game featuring the teams and players of Japan’s J.League.

Released in Japan in 1999, Perfect Striker 2 builds on the arcade-style football of its predecessor with updated teams, players and competitions from the 1999 J.League season.

Choose from Japan’s professional clubs and take control on the pitch, with a range of match and competition modes designed around fast, accessible football. The game puts an emphasis on attacking play, quick passing and shooting, making it a particularly enjoyable multiplayer option for the Nintendo 64.

The game features the 1999 J.League season, making it a great time capsule of Japanese football at the end of the 1990s. For collectors, it’s an interesting snapshot of the clubs, players and football culture of the era.

Put your shogi skills to the test with Saikyō Habu Shōgi, a Japanese-exclusive Nintendo 64 title featuring one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Released in Japan in 1996, Saikyō Habu Shōgi is built around Yoshiharu Habu, the legendary Japanese professional shogi player who dominated the game throughout the 1990s. The game brings his expertise to the Nintendo 64, offering a range of shogi challenges for both newcomers and experienced players.

Shogi is often described as Japanese chess, but its unique rules make it a very different game. Captured pieces can be returned to the board and used by the capturing player, creating a constantly changing battlefield where even a seemingly decisive advantage can quickly disappear.

Saikyō Habu Shōgi provides a digital version of this traditional Japanese strategy game, with computer opponents designed to challenge players across different levels of ability.

The real draw for collectors is its connection to Yoshiharu Habu, whose name appears directly in the title. Habu became the first professional shogi player to simultaneously hold all seven major titles and is widely regarded as one of the greatest shogi players of all time.

This was a Japan-only Nintendo 64 release, making it an interesting example of the specialist strategy games that were produced for the Japanese market but never localised for Western audiences.

The game is entirely Japanese-language and requires an understanding of Japanese shogi terminology and rules.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

A fascinating piece of Japanese gaming history and a great addition for collectors interested in shogi, Japanese culture or the more unusual corners of the Nintendo 64 library.

Hit the waves and take on the ultimate water racing challenge with Wave Race 64: Kawasaki Jet Ski, Nintendo’s high-speed Nintendo 64 racer.

Released in Japan in 1996, Wave Race 64 takes the classic arcade racing formula out onto the water, putting you on a powerful jet ski and challenging you to master waves, currents, tight turns and changing weather conditions.

Developed by Nintendo EAD, the game features dynamic water physics that were a standout technical achievement for the Nintendo 64. Waves aren’t simply part of the scenery — they actively affect your speed, handling and ability to stay upright, meaning learning to read the water is just as important as knowing the course.

Race through a range of courses featuring buoys, ramps, sharp turns and changing weather conditions, with different racing modes to test your skills. The game’s analogue controls give you precise control over your jet ski, while leaning into turns and using the waves correctly can make the difference between victory and a spectacular wipeout.

The Japanese release is titled Wave Race 64: Kawasaki Jet Ski and launched in Japan on 27 September 1996, making it one of the earliest Nintendo 64 releases. It was subsequently released in North America and Australia/Europe, so this is a Japanese version rather than a Japanese exclusive.

Wave Race 64 became one of the defining early Nintendo 64 racing games and remains a great showcase for the console’s analogue controls and impressive water effects.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

A classic early N64 racer and an essential addition for anyone building a Japanese Nintendo 64 collection.

Take control of some seriously tiny cars in Choro Q 64, Takara’s chaotic arcade racer for the Nintendo 64.

Released in Japan in 1998, Choro Q 64 brings the popular Japanese toy-car series into 3D racing. Known internationally as Penny Racers, the game combines traditional racing with plenty of customisation, hazards and weapons to create something a little different from your usual N64 racer.

Choose your favourite little car and compete across a variety of courses, earning parts and upgrades as you race. You can customise your vehicle with different engines, tyres, wheels, body parts and decorative components, allowing you to build a car that suits your racing style.

Things get considerably more chaotic once you start adding weapons and attack parts. Cannons, missiles, mines and other gadgets can be used to interfere with your opponents, turning races into something closer to a miniature demolition derby than a straightforward driving game.

There’s also a course editor, letting you create your own tracks and save them alongside your customised cars using a Controller Pak. With support for up to four players, Choro Q 64 is at its best when the whole room gets involved.

The Japanese release is particularly fun for collectors thanks to its original Choro Q 64 title and distinctly Japanese presentation. The game was later released internationally under the name Penny Racers, so this is a Japanese version rather than a Japanese exclusive.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

A wonderfully quirky piece of Japanese N64 racing history — and a great choice for anyone who likes their racing games a little less serious.
