Pokemon Pocket Monsters Stadium (1998) – Nintendo 64 (Japanese Exclusive) – Cartridge Only

Experience the original Pokémon Stadium with Pocket Monsters Stadium, the Japan-only Nintendo 64 game that brought Pokémon battles into 3D for the first time.

Released exclusively in Japan in 1998, Pocket Monsters Stadium was the first game in the Pokémon Stadium series and the first Pokémon game released for Nintendo 64 in Japan. It allows players to bring Pokémon raised in the Game Boy games into 3D battles using the Nintendo 64’s 64GB Pak.

Unlike the later Pokémon Stadium games, this original release features 40 Pokémon available for 3D battles, with the remaining first-generation Pokémon appearing in other game modes and the Pokédex. Players can compete in tournaments, battle against friends and explore their Pokémon collections in 3D.

The game also includes a range of features that would become familiar in later Stadium releases, including Pokémon organisation, Pokédex viewing and the ability to play compatible Game Boy Pokémon games through the Nintendo 64’s Game Boy functionality.

This release is particularly interesting for collectors because it was never released outside Japan. The following Japanese Pokémon Stadium 2 became the international Pokémon Stadium, making the naming history of the series particularly confusing for collectors.

The Japanese release features Japanese text and menus. Please note that an understanding of Japanese may be required to get the most out of the game.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play. A 64GB Pak is required for the Game Boy connectivity features.

A fascinating piece of early Pokémon history and a must-have for collectors exploring the original Japanese Nintendo 64 library.
