Step up to the plate with Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 4, the first entry in Konami’s hugely popular Powerful Pro Baseball series to make the jump to Nintendo 64.
Released exclusively in Japan in 1997, Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 4 brought the distinctive chibi-style baseball series into 3D, taking advantage of the Nintendo 64’s analogue stick and improved hardware.
This isn’t just another baseball game — Power Pro 4 is an important entry in the history of the series. It introduced analogue batting and pitching controls, allowing players to use the Nintendo 64’s 3D stick for more precise control. The game also features polygonal stadiums and improved presentation, making it a significant technical step forward from the earlier Super Famicom games.
One of the biggest additions is Success Mode, the story-driven player development mode that would go on to become one of the defining features of the Powerful Pro Baseball series. Create and develop your own player, work your way through professional baseball and deal with the various events and challenges that can affect your career.
The game features real Japanese professional baseball teams and players from the 1997 season, along with a range of traditional baseball modes. You can play individual games, compete through pennant races and Japan Series competition, or spend your time developing players through Success Mode.
It’s also notable for introducing several characters who would become staples of the Power Pro universe, including Abareta Yasu, Mamoru Igari and Akio Yabe.
The game is entirely Japanese-language, so an understanding of Japanese will be required to get the most out of the menus and Success Mode.
Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.
A fascinating piece of Nintendo 64 and Japanese baseball history — and particularly worthwhile for fans of the Power Pro series.
