Hit the waves and take on the ultimate water racing challenge with Wave Race 64: Kawasaki Jet Ski, Nintendo’s high-speed Nintendo 64 racer.

Released in Japan in 1996, Wave Race 64 takes the classic arcade racing formula out onto the water, putting you on a powerful jet ski and challenging you to master waves, currents, tight turns and changing weather conditions.

Developed by Nintendo EAD, the game features dynamic water physics that were a standout technical achievement for the Nintendo 64. Waves aren’t simply part of the scenery — they actively affect your speed, handling and ability to stay upright, meaning learning to read the water is just as important as knowing the course.

Race through a range of courses featuring buoys, ramps, sharp turns and changing weather conditions, with different racing modes to test your skills. The game’s analogue controls give you precise control over your jet ski, while leaning into turns and using the waves correctly can make the difference between victory and a spectacular wipeout.

The Japanese release is titled Wave Race 64: Kawasaki Jet Ski and launched in Japan on 27 September 1996, making it one of the earliest Nintendo 64 releases. It was subsequently released in North America and Australia/Europe, so this is a Japanese version rather than a Japanese exclusive.

Wave Race 64 became one of the defining early Nintendo 64 racing games and remains a great showcase for the console’s analogue controls and impressive water effects.

Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.

A classic early N64 racer and an essential addition for anyone building a Japanese Nintendo 64 collection.
