Take to the skies with Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team in Star Fox 64, Nintendo’s iconic Nintendo 64 space shooter.

Originally released in Japan in 1997, Star Fox 64 puts you in the cockpit of the Arwing as you defend the Lylat System from the forces of the evil Andross. Blast through enemy fighters, navigate asteroid fields and take on huge bosses as you fight your way towards Venom.

The game isn’t simply a straightforward run from beginning to end. Your performance during missions can open up different routes through the Lylat System, giving you multiple paths to explore and plenty of reason to replay the game. There are 15 missions across multiple branching routes, with different challenges and encounters depending on the choices you make.

You’ll spend most of your time behind the controls of Fox’s iconic Arwing, but the game also gives you the opportunity to pilot the Landmaster tank and explore underwater environments in the Blue Marine.

And then there’s the Rumble Pak.

Star Fox 64 was famously designed alongside Nintendo’s Rumble Pak and was the first Nintendo 64 game to support it. The Japanese release was even available as a bundle with the Rumble Pak, making it an important part of the accessory’s history.

When you’re finished saving the galaxy, challenge your friends to the game’s four-player multiplayer, with several different battle modes available.

The Japanese version is officially titled Star Fox 64 (スターフォックス64). Interestingly, Australian and European releases were renamed Lylat Wars because of trademark concerns surrounding the Star Fox name.

That makes the Japanese cartridge particularly appealing to collectors — you’re getting the original Star Fox 64 title, rather than the Lylat Wars name used on Australian N64 releases.
