Step into the dohyo and begin your journey towards becoming a Yokozuna in 64 Ōzumō, a uniquely Japanese Nintendo 64 take on the world of professional sumo wrestling.
Released exclusively in Japan in 1997, 64 Ōzumō combines traditional sumo matches with a surprisingly deep career mode. Start your wrestler’s journey and work your way up the ranks through training, competition and decisions that influence your development along the way.
The matches themselves use the Nintendo 64’s analogue stick and C-buttons to control your wrestler’s movements and perform different techniques. Timing and positioning are key — get your opponent outside the ring or force them to touch the ground first and the match is yours.
There’s more to the game than simply stepping into the ring. Training, diet and other aspects of a sumo wrestler’s daily life all form part of the career experience, giving 64 Ōzumō a management-simulation element alongside its wrestling gameplay.
The game features a range of unusual training and gameplay scenarios, including some wonderfully surreal locations — with areas inspired by places as unexpected as the Moon and Egypt.
Once you’ve developed your wrestler, you can take them into competitive matches, with multiplayer support for up to four players. The game is also compatible with both the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak and Controller Pak.
Never released outside Japan, 64 Ōzumō is a fascinating example of the highly specialised sports games produced for the Japanese Nintendo 64 library.
The game is entirely Japanese-language, so an understanding of Japanese will be required to get the most out of the career and management elements.
Please note: this is a Japanese NTSC-J cartridge and requires compatible Japanese or region-compatible Nintendo 64 hardware to play.
A wonderfully niche piece of Japanese Nintendo 64 history and a great addition to any collection exploring the stranger corners of the N64 library.
